Meet Walt and Wanda. They’re brother and sister water molecules. They’ve traveled the water cycle many times, and are excited to share their experience with you. Right now Walt and Wanda are in the cloud. Let’s go see what the are up to!
Look closely, do you see Walt and Wanda? There they are! It seems that they are starting to condensate and get really squished together. Uh-oh , now they’re getting cold.
This is very exciting because we don’t know where Walt and Wanda will land. The Earth is seventy percent water, so they could land in Australia, North America ,or even Asia! You can never tell what they will land as, either. They could land as a gas, a liquid, or a solid.
There they go, off to start their next journey through the water cycle! They have turned into small, frozen balls of water called hail. They have also come down as other things, like rain and snow.
It looks like they’ve broken the surface tension of the puddle. That means that Walt and Wanda are now inside of the puddle, and rising to the surface because of water density. Water density is what allows things to float in water, just like ice.
It took a while, but Walt and Wanda are finally melted. Whoa! Someone just threw a rock into the puddle, causing adhesion to occur. In this case, adhesion is the water sticking to the rock. But it can happen with anything. Polarity is the reason that adhesion can occur.
Hey, look, there is a hole in the ground where water is hitting. That is because water is the universal solvent, and when the cars run over the puddle the water splashes into the dirt with so much force it creates a dent. A universal solvent is where something is able to dissolve many different things, just like how water dissolves the dirt.
Now that it is night time and it’s getting cold Walt and Wanda have become cohesive and are sticking together, which has created a hydrogen bond. A hydrogen bond determines every property of the droplet of water.
After a few hours, Walt and Wanda have become frozen into the crack s of the rock, which is called capillary action. It is going to take a long time for them to completely melt again because of specific heat, which is how quickly water can take in and release heat.
Two days later Walt and Wanda have melted again and are ready to evaporate. The water vapor they travel with can be emitted from many places, such as plants. After evaporating Walt and Wanda will start the cycle all over again.
The water cycle is significant to our world. This is because the temperature of the oceans change more slowly to help protect animals and the climate.
