Maritime Safety & Security Information System

  • A non-classified, multi-lateral, freely shared data network exchanging AIS data between participating governments.
  • Data is:
    • Shared in original form, unaltered
    • Distributed in near real-time
    • Contributed by a Nation to obtain a more global picture
    • Protected by commercially accepted Internet standards.
  • Now establishing an International Governance Board to include global Regional Representatives.

A tool for building trust among nations.

control versus benefits
Control versus Benefits…
  • “…you are to only trust weather data from the Washington Office…”

(Telegram to Isaac Cline, Weather Service Galveston 9/6/1900)

  • “…hugely greater benefits than originally envisioned”

(First networked telephones, circa 1876 = Metcalf’s Law of Networking…)

  • “Greater security through global standards.”

(Banking Industry during creation of ATM’s).

  • “…an honest and open environment can bring out the best in people”

(eBay…and they make use of public user ratings)

  • “We need Greater awareness & recognition between friend and foe“

(“…but we do not agree with a non-governmental entity handling AIS distribution…”)
