  2. TYPES OF EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES PROGRAMS • Major equipment • Multi-user instruments • Equipment associated with a grant • Developing new equipment • Facilities • Center of Excellence • Discounts on instrumentation • Free equipment from manufacturers • Free used equipment from other labs

  3. SHARED INSTRUMENTATION • NSF - topical • e.g. Computer and Information Sciences • NIH - at least three users with NIH grants • Must have a specific connection • DOD - at least one DOD grant • Loosely associated

  4. EQUIPMENT ASSOCIATED WITH A GRANT • Need a large grant to be able to buy equipment on the grant. • Can be split between multiple grants. • Must consult with each agency.

  5. DEVELOPING NEW EQUIPMENT • Equipment grants will fund the construction of equipment that is not commercially available. • NSF Major Research Instrumentation Grants • NSF - Instrument Development for Biological Research (IDBR)

  6. FACILITIES • There are not that many sources of support for the construction of facilities. Examples • Brooks Foundation • Library • Capital construction • Innovative equipment • Education • Buildings • Hyde and Watson Foundation • Capital projects • Humanities

  7. CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE • Large Center of Excellence grants may allow equipment purchases

  8. DISCOUNTS ON INSTRUMENTS • Discounts from manufacturers • Made in the form of a grant • Usually must write a proposal • BI-COR • Matching funds • DNA Sequencers and software

  9. FREE EQUIPMENT FROM MANUFACTURERS • Grant or donation • Mostly computers - Sun, Microsoft • Companies want students to use their equipment and publish papers using data from their instruments. • Micromeritics • Particle size analyzers

  10. Used Equipment • Intra-agency • Can get equipment from DOE labs if you have a DOE grant • Usually in bad condition • Web page list • Check often. Occasionally a piece of useful equipment becomes available.

  11. THE SECRET:CREDIBLE MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING STRUCTURE • The agency or foundation must be convinced that you can manage the equipment and keep it functioning. • Especially true for undergraduate institutions • For shared instruments they need to be assured that you will train others to use it.

  12. BOARD OF DIRECTORS (ADVISORS) • Explicit list of people • Names and titles • P.I.’s • Chair • Dir. Of Research Admin. • How often will you meet ? • Set policy • Future development

  13. Maintenance and Operation • Who will maintain instrument? • Specifically name person and hours assigned • Where are the funds going to come from? • Who will operate the instrument? • How do you schedule the instrument?

  14. TRAINING • How will you train new users • On demand? Each semester?

  15. Be sure to call the agency in advance to discuss your planned submission. It is important to know which program to submit to if there are multiple users.
