Time Span of the Mastodon • The mastodon lived from 34,000,000 years ago to 11,000 years ago in the Oligocene to Pleistocene period.
Relative • The elephant is very well known as the closest living animal relative to the mastodon.
Fossil Evidence • The oldest fossil ever found was separated from the earth in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fossils have also been found in; England, Germany, The Netherlands, N.A., Romania, and Northern Greece.
Environment • The mastodon lived in North America until the end of the ice age. It roamed the earth for over a million years, but suddenly disappeared (perhaps because of the climate changes). These elephant-like animals were affected by environmental changes. Mastodons living during the middle of the last glaciations were small, whereas those living later in forests were larger. It was mostly adapted to conifer forests and marsh.
Plants • There were conifer twigs, swamp plants, larch, spruce, pine, grass, mosses, etc.
