  3. Spoken solo: In 1803, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from the Emperor of France Napoleon Bonaparte. The territory was enormous over 825,000 square miles

  4. Spoken solo: It stretched north from New Orleans to the Canadian border and west from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. Spoken solo: President Thomas Jefferson sent Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their Corps of Discovery to explore the vast region. Their journey began in May 1804

  6. Spoken solo: More than 40 men were part of the expedition to explore the western territory. The journey was very difficult and took several years.

  7. Spoken solo: Along the way, Lewis & Clark kept extensive journals. They recorded all of their discoveries, including their encounters with may native tribes. Spoken solo: Most of the tribes were friendly and even helped them. A French trader and his Indian wife Sacajawea joined the expedition in November 1804. Sacajawea gave birth to a baby boy in February 1805.

  9. Spoken solo: The expedition crossed the Rocky Mountains passed the Continental Divide and made it all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Then, in March of 1806 they turned around and headed home.

  10. Spoken solo: With them, they carried maps, scientific specimens, and lots of information about the new territory which led to further exploration and settlement.

  11. Spoken solo: Lewis & Clark’s Corps of Discovery successfully completed their mission in September 1806. Their journey is remembered as one of the greatest American adventures of all time!
