  1. Big Mo, Big Bro, Let’s Go – The Growing Trend TowardsSustainability Presented to Mary Baldwin College Team Presented by: Kevin Palmer The Center for Sustainable Solutions kjmp@c4s2.org

  2. The Challenge Resource Availability Resource Consumption We’re at zero balance on earths – we’ve only got one, no spares.

  3. The Challenge as Viewed by Humans Well being Human Survival Goods & Services Raw Materials Natural Resources

  4. The Triple Bottom Line

  5. So Let’s Begin… The Growing Momentum of Sustainability in the United States… • Big Mo – the story of a changing society • Big Bro – the story of a changing government • Let’s Go – the story of where we are going

  6. Big MO Momentumis building - We are making, using and pursuing sustainable alternatives…

  7. 2008 Global List of Most Sustainable Companies US Firms Include: • Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) • Agilent Technologies • Alcoa Inc • Coca Cola Company • Eastman Kodak Company • General Electric Company • Hewlett-Packard Company • Intel Corp. • Nike Inc. • Walt Disney Company Source: http://www.global100.org/2008/index.asp

  8. World’s second largest company ($312B revenues/yr) launches aggressive sustainability program that includes: • Procurement of green products from its 60,000 suppliers • Providing sustainable and fair trade agricultural products • Reducing infrastructure energy use • Reducing transportation energy use

  9. Some Goals • Reduce gasoline useage by its truck fleet (one of the largest in the US) by 25% over the next three years and 50% by 2017. They estimate annual fuel savings of $310M/yr by 2015. • Purchase 100% of its wild-caught salmon and frozen fish from “sustainable” fisheries within 3-5 years • Cut energy use in 7,000 stores by 30% and greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2014. • Reduce solid waste by 25% over the next seven years. Source: USA Today 25 September 2006

  10. Benefits • By trimming packaging on its line of toys, it saved $2.4M/yr in shipping cost, 3800 trees, and 1 Million Barrels of oil. • Exploring LED lights in refrigerated food cases – will cut energy use by 50% and outperform fluorescent lights. • World’s largest buyer of organic cotton – based on one product line conversion.

  11. “We take the position that the debate is over… We have to deal with greenhouse gases.” John Hofmeister President Shell Oil (U.S.) November 13, 2006 Source – Andrew Winston author of Green to Gold

  14. Jatropha… Africa’s new bio-fuel source may feed European demand for bio-diesel – Jatropha is a scrub plant used to fence cattle… What’s our next fuel source?

  15. Coalition to Make Buildings Energy-Efficient • A coalition of 16 of the world’s biggest cities, five banks, companies, groups, and one former president working to invest billions to reduce urban energy use. • Target cities: Bangkok; Berlin; Chicago; Houston; Johannesburg; Karachi; London; Melbourne; Mexico City; Mumbai; New York; Rome; São Paulo; Seoul; Tokyo; and Toronto. 20. Big Bro

  21. Federal Government… Is establishing a National Direction on Sustainability every level of the government: • Executive • Legislative • Agency • Army

  22. Bush Administration’s Executive Order 13423Energy, Water and Buildings • ENERGY EFFICIENCY • BUILDING PERFORMANCE • WATER CONSERVATION • VEHICLES PETROLEUM CONSERVATION • ALTERNATIVE FUEL USE • PROCUREMENT • POLLUTION PREVENTION • ELECTRONICS MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

  23. Legislative Regulations, like the Energy Policy Act of 2005 require Federal Agencies to change energy use patterns: • Annual energy reduction goal of 2% from FY 2006 - FY 2015; • Electric metering required in federal buildings by 2012; • Buildings to be designed to 30% below ASHRAE standard or International Energy Conservation Code unless proven to be not life-cycle cost-effective • Renewable electricity consumption by the Federal government can not be less than:3 percent in FY 2007-FY 20095 percent in FY 2010-FY 20127.5 percent in 2013 and thereafter Pending Energy Security Act to establish additional standards Source:http://www1.eere.energy.gov/femp/news/news_detail.html?news_id=9780

  25. Defense Science Board Considering selected recommendations like: • All installations able to achieve Net-Zero energy status, i.e., they will produce as much energy as they consume by 2025. • Beginning with the FY09 MILCON program, all new construction projects and all renovation projects exceeding 50% of replacement cost will achieve an energy efficiency performance of 50% better than the current ASHRAE 90.1 performance standard. • Sustainable Design criterion for all facilities that requires achieving the LEED-GOLD criterion for all new construction, major renovations, housing, and existing buildings.

  26. Let’s Go! It’s our turn.

  33. Degree Programs • Many, many offerings in sustainable design, policy, engineering… • Independent programs in a larger field of study (engineering, environmental science, etc.) • Not so many integrated into core offerings

  34. Why not try all three?

  35. The Trifecta • Look to create a sustainable campus operation, maintenance, and construction functions • Develop a course of study where students complete projects that will support the development of a sustainable community • Evaluate endowment programs to insure investment in responsible entities • Create core degree programs that teach sustainable decision-making in the context of the field of study

  36. The Question How do we leave the world and prepare them for the future?

  37. Questions?
