Why do I need to know how to organize data? When you look for information to help make important decisions, you will often find that information in the form of a graph. Knowing how data is gathered and organized will not only help you to know if the graph is useful, but may also aid you in making important decisions. What is a statistic? • They are tools for helping answer big questions, • They are generalizations about lots of pieces of information, • They are data that somebody has sorted, analyzed, displayed and based conclusions on. Math on Call- Great Source Education Group p.262-276
Range • The difference between the greatest and least numbers in a set of data. Ex: Find the Range in the data set. 17, 18, 31, 32, 38, 45, 48, 59, 65 and 78 • Why is it important to know how to find the range? Mean • In math, mean = average. • You find the mean by adding all values in a data set and dividing the sum by the total number of values. Ex. In 6 basketball games, you score 15, 12, 19, 10, 22 and 18 points. Find the mean of your scores? Math on Call- Great Source Education Group p.262-276
Median • Median is another type of average. • The median is the number that falls in the middle of the set of data when arranged in order from least to greatest. Ex. Find the median customers per hour. Math on Call- Great Source Education Group p.262-276
Mode • The mode is the value that occurs most in a data set. • THERE MAY BE MORE THAN ONE MODE. Any values that occur the most in a data set may be the mode. Ex. Bimodal (two modes) • THERE MAY BE NO MODE. Ex. Maximum speed limits in state: 55, 60, 60, 55, 55, 55, 65, 65, 70, 75, 75, 70, 55, 50, 60 Find the mode of the data set.
