  1. Warm Up • Get your notebook. Grab a notecard from the front. Put your name on it. Answer the following questions: • 1. Looking in your notes, what is the scientific definition for work? • NOT THE FORMULA!!!! 2. Which ramp would require the least amount of work? A. B.

  2. Cell Theory • All living things are made of cells. • Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all living things. (structure = form; function = purpose) • Cells come from pre-existing cells.

  3. Aristotle • 334 B.C.E. • Observed nature directly. • He classified all known organisms as either plants or animals. • B.C.E.= Before Common Era

  4. Hans & Zacharias Janssen • 1595 • Produced the first compound microscope by lining up 2 lenses.

  5. Robert Hooke • 1665 • Observed living matter from a piece of cork through a compound microscope, which reveals empty cells. • He is the first to call the spaces in the cork “cells” which means little rooms.

  6. Anton van Leeuwenhoek • 1675 • Observed living cells through a simple microscope.

  7. Matthias Schleiden • 1838 • Discovered that plants were made of cells.

  8. Theodor Schwann • 1839 • States “all animals are made of cells.”

  9. William Henry Perkin • 1856 • Develops an intense purple dye, which is used to stain slides.

  10. Rudolph Virchow • 1858 • Rudolph Virchow states… “Where a cell exists, there must have been a preexisting cell.”

  11. Create a Cell Timeline • Label the timeline with the dates, scientist names, and details of the important discoveries. • The earliest date should be on the left and the most recent on the right. • 8 events & 8 pictures • Graded on neatness, accuracy, and use of color. • List Cell Theory and the 3 parts of the Cell Theory.
