  1. How much money we need for a research project ? • Financial support is a must for undertaking any research work. • Unjustified request for fund may lead to rejection of the project • Too less of finance may lead to difficulty in completion of a proposed project. • Budget is a rational approach towards requirement of fund for research.

  2. What is budget? • A budget ensures that sufficient resources (financial, personnel, and infrastructure /equipment) are available to complete the research work that is being proposed. • It should be based on a full analysis of research project costs, and aim to get the sponsor to pay for as many of those costs as possible, while ensuring that both the sponsoring agency and Institutional guidelines are followed.

  3. Justification • The budget justification narrative, required by most agencies, is an important opportunity to describe exactly how budget items will be used to complete the study. • A carefully constructed detailed budget increases the likelihood of securing funding because it documents the research team’s expertise to the funding agency. An accurate budget is essential to provide the necessary resources to conduct the study.

  4. At what stage it should be done? • Preparing a research proposal budget can seem like an overwhelming responsibility, especially for new investigators. • Preparing a detailed budget during the proposal stage can minimize budget management difficulties once the project is funded.

  5. Budget of a research project

  6. Nonrecurring Expenditure Refer to one time expenditure

  7. Equipment for Sample processing

  8. Equipment for Storage

  9. Instruments for Quantification

  10. Instruments for Quantification

  11. Instruments for Quantification • Spectro flurometer (8-10L): Measurement of fluroescence. • Nephlometer (2-3L) : Immuno-turbidimetry • Chemiluminiscence (4-5L) : • Multimode reader (12-15L)

  12. Instruments for Quantification Costly and big instruments • Gas Chromatography (15-20L) • HPLC (30-50L) • Atomic absorption spectrophotometer (30-40L) • Flowcytometer (50-60L) • Flowcytometer with cell sorter ( 75- 100L)

  13. Equipments for Molecular Biology research • Thermo cycler personal (2-3L) gradient ( 5-6L) • Gel Electrophoresis (2-3 L) • Gel documentation System (5-6L) • Real time PCR (20-25 L) • Gene analysis system (40L)

  14. BUDGET FOR EQUIPMENT*

  15. Justification for the proposed equipment • The Department of Biochemistry, University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi, where the proposed research project work will be executed, has all the necessary equipments as mentioned in “facilities/equipments being extended by parent institution” except the above mentioned equipment. • A Real time PCR machine (Q-PCR), critical for quantifying gene expression patterns, is essential for achieving the objectives. • The department is initiating cell / tissue culture facility and have all the other equipments such as Laminer flow, CO2 incubator except an inverted microscope with a digital camera attached to a computer, for detailed image analysis. • We will also require liquid nitrogen containers that will be used for storing the cell lines. • A dedicated deep freezer will be essential for storing tissue culture material, temperature sensitive reagents and samples for the project as the existing freezers are overloaded.

  16. Recurring Expenditure Repeating Expenditure • Manpower • Consumable • Travel • Contingency • Overhead • Expenditure to be mentioned Year wise separately for all the above mentioned items depending on the experimental protocol.

  17. Manpower Research Personnel Help in planning, execution & data collection • Research associate ( 23-24 K*) • Medical officer ( 20K*) • Senior research fellow ( 18-20 K* ) • Junior Research Fellow ( 16-18 K* ) • Research Assistant ( 21K *) * + HRA @ as admissible

  18. Technical Personnel • Technical Officer/ Computer programmer (29.5K*) • Data entry operator/ Statistician (26.5 K*) • Technician/ Data entry operator/ Nurse / Field worker ( 17.5*) • Lab. Assistant/ data entry operator Jr ( 15.5K*) • Office assistant/ Driver (11.9 K*) • Lab. Attendant/ Animal attendant ( 11K*) * Consolidated salary

  19. BUDGET FOR SALARIES / WAGES

  20. Justification for the manpower requirement (i) Junior Research Fellow (One) : The experiments and estimations planned in the proposed research project will be carried out by the investigators themselves / their post-graduate students. However, to assist in the basic work like isolation of cells / DNA, preparation of reagents, sample collection and processing and data computation, a skilled JRF is required. Therefore, we propose to recruit one JRF with M.Sc./M.Tech degree in Biochemistry/Life Sciences/Medical Laboratory Technology/ Biotechnology (NET qualified) with at least one year work experience in a Biochemistry/Molecular biology laboratory and in-hand experience in molecular biology techniques; pay as per DST rules. (ii) Laboratory attendant : The proposed project involves collection of large number of human samples. Transportation of samples from O.P.D. to lab, processing, storage, analysis, and disposal of samples, assisting tissue culture procedures like washing of plasticware and glassware, autoclaving and cleaning of lab accessories demands a full time helping hand. Therefore, we felt the need of a laboratory attendant with some work experience in laboratory work; consolidated pay as per DST rules.

  21. Consumables

  22. Consumables To be calculated year wise as per sample size and other variables. • Drugs /Medicines • Chemicals • Plastic wares/ glass wares • Disposables

  23. Justification for consumables The budget for biological reagents and chemicals constitute a major expenditure for this project. Many of the reagents are not manufactured in India and have to be imported either directly or through their distributors. We will require reagents for (i) Gas chromatography (GC) based analysis, that include HPLC grade solvents, high quality nitrogen gas and standerds and GC vials. ECD column used for GC can cater to approximately 300 – 400 samples. As we will process more than seven hundred samples, we will require two such ECD columns (ii) Molecular biology work with special requirements for Real time PCR (Taqman master mix and real time tubes), reagents / kits for DNA and RNA isolation and PCR based reagents such as dNTPs, restriction enzymes, Taq polymerase for gene polymorphism studies (iii) Cell culture. For in vitro work, two cell lines will be commercially procured. (iv) As Real time PCR and cell culture are sensitive areas of research, we will require at least two sets of dedicated autopipettes exclusively for each area.

  24. Plastic wares • Autopipette : Routine use (3-5K) For small volume (7-10K) Multichannel (20K) Electronic (50K) • Other commonly required plastic wares • ELISA plates, Microcentifuge tubes (2/1.5/0.5,0.2mL @ 1K/1000) , Microtips (1000/100/10uL @ 1k/1000), Tip boxes (1000/100/10uL @3K/12), centrifuge tubes (15/50mL @ 1K/100 ), sample storage boxes (2/1.5/0.5/0.2mL @ 3k/12), etc.

  25. BUDGET FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS

  26. Travel • Expenditure for travel include : • Sample collection ( particularly for survey/ epidemiologic/ multi centric sampling). • Travel expenditure for presenting research work in scientific meeting ( inland only). • Attending meeting for presenting annual reports to funding agency.

  27. BUDGET FOR TRAVEL Justification for travel The budget for travel will be utilized for presentation of research findings in different scientific meetings and DST grant monitoring meetings.

  28. Contingency • Expenditure under contingency include • Maintenance of equipment • Stationary • Printing material • Petty expenditure • Postage

  29. BUDGET FOR OTHER COSTS / CONTINGENCIES

  30. Overhead • A budgetary provision by the funding authority for infrastructural expenses to the Investigator & Project executing Institute. • Electrical fixture, AC, refrigerator, furniture, telephone/ internet bill, common minor equipment, contingent salary for manpower assistance, gas etc. • Calculated in terms of percentage of the total budget excluding equipments.
