Aims and Objectives • Clarify why you want to be a doctor/dentist/vet – skills and qualities needed • Gain relevant work experience • Examine the history of your chosen profession • Preparation of personal statement • Knowledge of the profession eg. NHS • Ethics issues • World h issues • BMAT/UKCAT test • Interview preparation

BMAT or UKCAT TEST ( Problem Solving and Critical Thinking) CHECK IF YOUR COURSE NEEDS ONE for 2006 • University of Bristol Veterinary School (D100) • University of Cambridge Medical and Veterinary School (A100, A101, D100) • Imperial College London (A100) • Manchester University (A104, A204) • Oxford University Medical School (A100 B100) • Royal Veterinary College (D100, D101) • University College London (A100) • FROM 2007 24 institutions will have UKCAT as entry requirement

  4. Medicine • Approx 30 Medical Schools • Applications 1000 – 3000 per institution. • Intake per medical school - approx 200 students. This included not only A level students but also mature students and students from overseas • Most popular universities (>2000 applications) = Manchester , Sheffield, Newcastle, Bristol, Leeds, Nottingham, Barts, Royal F, Southampton,

Medicine Entry Requirements • At least 5 grade A subjects at GCSE • GCSE Maths and English minimum at grade B • Some need 4 subjects at AS level e.g. Manchester • Generally, at A level must have Chemistry • Entrance requirements at A level AAB, generally • Some will accept AVCE double award but need a combinations of ay least 2 A levels also - Check individual institutions. • May need to take BMAT test; some ask for questionnaire to be filled on-line. UKCAT test from 2007

Selection Process e.g. York • Based on UCAS personal statement • Interview process • Process of selection is by RANKING i.e. a score will be given and top 370 out of 2000 applicants recommended for offer • Report from personal tutor to give evidence of mitigating circumstances and supporting the application

  7. Dentistry • Approx 13 dental schools • Applications 1000 – 2000 per year. Intake 55 -200 places, includes mature students and from overseas • GCSE 5 or 6 subjects grade A/B including Maths and English at grade B minimum , some will want grade A • Typically: Chem/Biol + 1 other subject • A levels AAB and/or AVCE A grade. Check with the institution. • Check if requirement for BMAT/UKCAT. From 2007 UKCAT test also

  8. Requirements for Dentistry • Evidence of manual dexterity • Commitment to dentisty • Team and leadership evidence • Non-academic interests • Work experience • Fitness to practice

Veterinary Science • 6 vet schools in the UK: Bristol; Cambridge; Edinburgh; Glasgow; Liverpool; Royal Veterinary College, London • Some courses have Veterinary Gateway Programme if grades not predicted to be high enough at A level e.g. Royal College , London and Liverpool • High grades at GCSE ( at least 5 grade A’s) and A level: AAA/AAB

Requirements • Awareness of welfare issues • Interpersonal skills • Motivation • Scientific and research ability • Knowledge of ethical issues • Knowledge of the profession • Work experience: veterinary work experience and animal work experience (may need reference from work-experience providers)

Summary: Short Listing Candidates • Clear motivation for choosing medicine/dentistry/veterinary science • Realistic view of the profession • Work experience • General knowledge of health care, animal welfare etc • Interest and hobbies • Determination/conscientiousness/persistence • Communication skills – written and verbal • Autonomy and responsibility • Intellectual potential and curiosity • Manage multiple demands

Work experience • Must have evidence of long-term, regular experience in voluntary caring role – contact hospices, residential homes, veterinary, animal welfare, dental practices • King Fisher placement (see Connexions, Carol Bates for work shadowing) • Go to Open Day – see websites • Use contacts • START NOW !!!! Not just in the summer
