  6. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert nitrogen gas to nitrates

  7. Plants use nitrates for protein synthesis

  8. Animals eat plants (produce nitrogenous wastes = urea & ammonia)

  9. Decomposers break down nitrogenous wastes and dead plants and animals  release ammonia into soil

  10. Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia into nitrates

  11. Plants use the nitrates OR • Denitrifying bacteria converts nitrates to nitrogen gas
