Density: Why Ice Floats in Water

Learn about density and how it relates to the concept of why ice cubes float in water. Discover the formula for density, how to calculate it, and understand the relationship between mass, volume, and density. Watch the video for a visual explanation. Find out how to match liquid layers based on their densities and answer key questions about density and liquid mixing scenarios.

  1. Write your response in two sentences What makes an ice cubes float in water ?

  2. Proof that water and ice have different densities

  3. DENSITY Density is defined as mass per unit volume. It is a measure of how tightly packed and how heavy the molecules are in an object. Density is the amount of matter within a certain volume.

  4. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SimFy9wOMXY Density Explained

  5. To find the density Mass is the amount of matter that it is in an abject. You find mass by using a triple beam balance to determine the (g) of an object. 1. Find the mass of the object ______ g Volume is how much space an object takes up. You measure volume of a solid by length x width x height. You measure a volume of liguid by using a graduated cylinder. To calculate the volume of an irregular shape, use water displacement. 2- Find the volume of the object Formula for density: 3- Divide Density = Mass Volume

  6. Units for Density • g/cm cubed= density of a solid • g/ml = density of a liquid

  7. Units for density g/cm3 or g/ml Formula: M = mass V= volume D = density M = D x V V = M / D D = M / V

  8. To find density: • Find the mass of the object • Find the volume of the object • Divide : Density = Mass - Volume Ex. If the mass of an object is 35 grams and it takes up 7 cm3 of space, calculate the density.

  9. To find density: • Find the mass of the object • Find the volume of the object • Divide : Density = Mass - Volume Ex. If the mass of an object is 35 grams and it takes up 7 cm3 of space, calculate the density. Set up your density problems like this: Given: Mass = 35 grams Unknown: Density (g/ cm3) Volume = 7 cm3 Formula: D = M / V Solution: D = 35g/7 cm3 D = 5 g/cm3

  10. Liquid Layers – Try on your own • Imagine that the liquids on the right have the following densities: • 15g/cm3 10g/cm3 • 3g/cm3 9g/cm3 • 7g/cm3 12g/cm3 • Match the colors to the correct densities

  11. Review • What is the formula for density? • What happens if you pour together liquids that have different densities? • Will the liquid on the top have the highest or lowest density? • Will the liquid on the bottom have the highest or lowest density?
