Riches to Poverty • Esperanza and her mom lived well on her father’s ranch in Mexico. The death of her father and the destruction of the ranch resulted in a new life as ordinary workers on a farm in California.
Humility • As a child on her father’s ranch, Esperanza was treated special. She had all the finer things for her comfort. After her dad’s passing she had to adjust her mannerisms even to keep her friends.
Responsibility • Working, saving, caring for mama and grandma Abuelita were some of the responsibilities assumed by Esperanza in her new life.
Hardship • Mama’s decision to leave for California to work on the farm for menial wages represented much hardship. Living arrangement became very basic in wooden cabins.
Resilience • The women featured in the story were all confronted with individual and collective challenges. They resorted to actions that ensured their survival.
