Chapter 5 Overview • Jody and Janie arrived in Florida and found a town filled with dozens of shacks. Jody introduced himself to the people in the town and asked to speak with the mayor. • After hearing the town had no mayor, he goes to speak with the townspeople and finds out the town is named Eatonville. • Jody buys 200 acres of the town and pushes his way into making himself a big man of the town. A man named Hicks tried to flirt with Janie but his friends laughed at him for flirting with such a powerful mans woman. • With Jody’s newly bought land he calls a town meeting and says he plans to build a store, a post office and wants people to go and bring in more residents. After the store is built, Jody is named Mayor of Eatonville. When Janie was asked to make a speech, he forbid her of doing so. A glance of Jody’s domineering ways over Janie. • Jody says the town needs a street lamp and once it is put up, he has a huge gathering/feast and lighting of the lamp to celebrate his accomplishments. • Jody too quickly gets carried away with himself and has a huge house built along with spittoons that make it look like he is belittling everyone else in the town and flaunting the wealth. • The townspeople question Jody because he is so aggressive and powerful, and wonder how Janie gets along with him so well. No one is brave enough to question him so he continues to do what he wants.
Chapter 6 Overview • In this chapter you can see Janie and Jody’s relationship start going downhill. • Janie's Head Rag • -Janie is ordered to were a head rag by Stark (or Jody rather) because he gets jealous of other men looking at her long hair. • -This shows Jodys more demanding side. • Matt Bonner's Mule • -In this chapter you hear a lot about this over worked and tired mule that is the talk of the people. • -When the mule runs away and is found by the people and is bothered by them, in an attempt to please Janie, Jody decides to buy the mule to free it from its suffering. • -When the mule dies they hold a funeral for it, and this results in them having a festive event. • -Although Jody's motives in the beginning were to please Janie in freeing the mule, he dosen't let her attend the event. • -As time goes on in the book you see janie is silently suffering but is not going to speak out about it. she has now been with jody for seven years now. • -She still has not fullfilled her dreams and asperations.
