  1. Using an e-portfolio to track the progress of our trainees Dr Elizabeth White School of Education, University of Hertfordshire UCET, Birmingham, Nov 2014

  2. The Team Alison Hudson (University of Hertfordshire) Jack Waller (Dialetyx) Stephen Arnold (Dialetyx)

  3. Portfolio of evidence A teaching portfolio is the structured documentary history of a (carefully selected) set of coached or mentored accomplishments substantiated by samples of student work and fully realised only through reflective writing, deliberation & serious conversation Shulman 1994

  4. A learning portfolio Portfolios can be learning-centred, a useful reflective tool for deeper learning. Here the learner can thread together their experiences and make connections

  5. Advantages of e-portfolio • Provides opportunities for reflection • Enables trainees to construct a narrative through which to make sense of their experiences • Enables trainees to share their evidence with all involved in their training • Can chose to publish some evidence to share with other trainees/future employers • Enables visiting tutors to provide more effective support and re-assurance between visits • Programme resources accessible to all stakeholders

  6. Advantages of e-portfolio • Fits in with life of trainee – convenient uploading • Facilitates rigorous monitoring of progress by the provider • Develops trainees’ skills/experience of using e-portfolios for learning • Reduced paperwork • Easy to scan handwritten work & upload

  7. Starting Simple • To provide an accessible location for the following electronic documents for each trainee: • Professional Mentor Meeting Record • Teacher Mentor Weekly Meeting Record • Individual Training Plan for each half term • Secondary Subject Knowledge Audit • To provide up to date resources for all mentors, tutors and trainees

  8. Starting simple • To record school assessment grade for trainee at three points in training against the Teachers’ Standards • For trainees to self assess themselves against the Teachers’ Standards at three times during the training before the assessment points • This information to be used to track progress of trainee centrally

  9. Standard 1 Set high expectations

  10. Over to you… • Do you use an e-portfolio? • How do you use it? • What else might be looking for in an e-portfolio?
