  9. 1) STUDENT SUCCESS Enhancing student support through the increased investment and sustained improvement of several key programs: 1) STAR – student ownership of academic progress, transparency 2) Improved Advising – mandatory, peer, four-year degree plans 3) Student Success Center – resources available in Sinclair Lib. 4) Student Success Programs – a) First-year: ACE, COP b) Learning Assistance Center c) Residential Learn. Prog. d) Writing Mentors e) 'Ike Ao Pono f) Native Hawaiian Science & Engineering Mentoring Prog

  10. 2) ENROLLMENT PLANNING Committee on Enrollment Planning established to develop initiatives, monitor progress and coordinate enrollment activities Five workgroups established: Numerous other initiatives are being considered and implemented (http://www.manoa.hawaii.edu/ovcaa/initiatives/enrollment)

  11. 3) PLANNING 2011-2015 Strategic Plan Update to the 2002-10 Plan Campus survey, focus groups, writing groups, town hall discussions Campus master planning Long Range Development Plan, Design Advisory Panel, Campus Facilities Planning Board Campus center renovation Assessment survey of student use, energy savings, Phase 2B (Recreation Center) underway Student housing Assessment survey, recruitment tours, Residential Learning Programs, new and remodeled facilities

  12. 4) PROGRAM REVIEW • External review introduces impartial expertise to program improvement process • College-wide approach provides more comprehensive review of programs • Informed decision-making based on accurate and timely data • Integration of annual program assessment results • The continuous improvement model provides one- and three-year progress reports that identify short- and longer-term areas for improvement with timelines

  13. 5) ASSESSMENT & INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH • Created and staffed the Assessment Office (AO) and the Mānoa Institutional Research Office (MIRO) • The AO is faculty-staffed and focused on engaging with academic programs to facilitate assessment activities and improved student learning • 100% of academic units now engage with the annual assessment report updates through online submission process • The MIRO is tasked with data retrieval and analyses for all campus constituents to support decision-making

  15. NEXT STEPS AT MĀNOA Sustainability will be achieved through maintenance and continued investment in the following: • Program Review • Enrollment Planning • Implementation of 2011-2015 Strategic Plan • Student Success

  16. 1) PROGRAM REVIEW Redesigned process, fully integrating with program assessment and support from institutional research generates sustainable practices for program improvement Dean involvement with program chairs in feedback & follow-up after program review provides continuous program improvement Three-year progress report provides mid-point review to link program review cycles

  17. 2) ENROLLMENT PLANNING The Committee on Enrollment Planning (CEP) and the five workgroups will continue to meet monthly to discuss new initiatives and monitor the implementation of improved or re-designed programs After an initial focus on low-cost, immediate-impact initiatives, the CEP will shift its focus to longer-term, more complex issues 24 specific action items have been approved by the CEP with definite next steps identified for further implementation

  18. 3) IMPLEMENTATION OF STRATEGIC PLAN Mānoa’s updated strategic plan (2011-2015) incorporates the values and objectives that are in our Institutional Proposal Values: Hawaiian Place of Learning, Local to Global Perspective, Sustainability, Community and Diversity Goals/Objectives: • Continued commitment to student engagement & success • Improved communication and community partnerships • Building a diverse community locally encompassed within a global perspective • Using innovative strategies and solutions to maintain a sustainable campus physical plant and infrastructure

  19. 4) STUDENT SUCCESS • First Year Programs - increased participation, enhanced services • Advising Improvements - continued updates to four-year degree plans, mandatory declaration of major by end of second year • Student Success Center - continued tracking of student engagement and use of facilities • Graduation & Retention Rate Analysis - expanded use of data for decision support on first-time freshmen and transfer students initiatives • Undergraduate Research Council - providing opportunities for students to be more involved in conducting research with faculty

WASC EER VISIT – MARCH 14-16, 2011 Visiting team comprised of four members from institutions spread across the U.S.: Ed Ray – Oregon State U Sharon Salinger – UC Irvine Scott Evenbeck – CUNY Susan Hansen – Susan M. Hansen & Assoc, Consultants to Higher Ed. One full day of meetings and events are planned for team members at various locations on Mānoa’s campus (March 15, 2011) Schedules of meetings and topics to be discussed will be posted online when finalized

  21. YOUR INVOLVEMENT DURING EER SITE VISIT Be prepared to discuss Institutional Proposal initiatives and progress made (read the Institutional Proposal and the CPR and EER Reports) Be available to participate in dialogues, focus groups, or other meetings with team members to discuss the Institutional Proposal, CPR and EER initiatives Show our Aloha to the visiting team
