  1. ATOD Factors that influence drug effects

  2. DRUG Is a substance that changes the way the body or mind works. • Helpful drugs • Medicine-is a drug used to prevent or cure an illness or disease to relieve pain. • Prescriptions • OTC-over the counter • Aspirin/Tylenol/Advil • Insulin for diabetes • Harmful drugs • Nicotine • Marijuana • Inhalants • Alcohol

  3. Type of Drug • Different types of drugs produce different responses. Each drug has a specific and intended action that is distinct from that of other drugs. • The effects of each drug last for different amounts of time.

  4. Purity of the Drug • Drugs obtained “on the street” or from unreliable sources may contain unknown substances in unknown amounts. • Many “look a like” and “act a like” drugs are similarly dangerous.

  5. vocabulary • Addiction: the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming. • Drug Misuse: using a prescription or OTC drug incorrectly. • Taking more than is prescribed • Taking another person’s prescription • Mixing medications without consulting a doctor • Drug Abuse: intentionally using a drug without medical or health reasons. • Taking an illegal drug • Habitual use of drugs to alter one’s mood, emotion, or state of consciousness

  6. Factors that influence a drugs effect Many factors determine the effects a drug has on an individual. These include but are not limited to: • How the drug enters the body. • The dosage, the amount you take. • The presence of other drugs already in the body. • Physical and psychological makeup of the person taking the drug.

  7. Factors that influence a drugs effect • The age of the person, children and elderly are affected more easily than are others. • Body weight of the person. The same amount of a drug will not affect a larger person as much as it would a smaller person. • Tolerance, after continuous use of certain drugs, people have to increase the dosage to get the desired effect.
