Sexual Reproduction • The joining of egg and sperm is called fertilization. • Egg is a female sex cell. • Sperm is the male sex cell. • Both are made during meiosis. • Fertilized egg is called a zygote.
Male Reproductive System • The testes, an endocrine gland which releases the hormone testosterone, is where sperm are produced. • Located in scrotum to minimize heat. • Testosterone controls male development. • Sperm has a head that contains chromosomes. • Sperm mixes with semen to provide an environment to swim. Semen also provides nutrients for sperm. • Semen travel down urethra which travel through the penis. Muscle contraction prevent urine and semen from mixing.
Female Reproductive System • Specialized to produce eggs (in ovaries) and nourish a developing baby until birth. Produces estrogen and other hormones for development. • Each month one ovary releases a mature egg (menstruation) down the fallopian tube. Fertilization, the joining of egg and sperm, occurs in the fallopian tube. • Egg travels to uterus, a hollow, muscular organ where egg attaches. If unfertilized, egg breaks down (menstruation). • Vagina or birth canal is where the baby leaves mother during childbirth.
