  2. 2014 NCS UPDATE for AASHTO/AWS D1.5 Boring or interesting?

  3. Boring? Interesting!

  4. 2014 NCS UPDATE for AASHTO/AWS D1.5 D1 changes officers in October 2014 • Duane Miller completes term as D1 Chair • Allen Sindel - Chair • Todd Niemann – 1st Vice Chair • Ronnie Medlock – 2nd Vice Chair

  5. 2014 NCS UPDATE for AASHTO/AWS D1.5 AWS adds staff to support D1 Committees • Two Staff for D1 Brian McGrath Steve Borrero

  6. 2014 NCS UPDATE for AASHTO/AWS D1.5 Meet twice per year • Spring meetings at AWS Headquarters • Fall meetings move around country • Public meetings D1.5 Dual Governed by AWS D1 committee and AASHTO T-17

  7. Holding Hands AASHTO and AWS agreed to a new organizational structure for D1.5 Committee. 6 AASHTO Members 6 AWS Members 6 General Interest Members

  8. General Interest Members • Duane Miller – Lincoln Electric • Dean Phillips – Hobart Brothers • Chuck Holmes – Modjeski & Masters • Jon Edwards – DOTQS • Robert Stachel – HRV • Ray Stieve – Greenman-Pederson D1.5 Membership -- 18 voting member AASHTO Members • Todd Niemann – MnDOT • Mary Grieco – Mass Hwy Dept • Kent Nelson – MODOT • Kevin Ledford – GaDOT • Steve Duke – FlDOT • Nina Choy – CaDOT AWS MEMBERS • Dave McQuaid - Consultant (Chair • Ronnie Medlock – High Steel (Vice Chair) • Heather Gilmer – Florida Structural Steel • Karl Frank – Hirschfield Industries • Nate Lindell – Oregon Iron Works • Buck Roberds – Industrial Steel

  9. Happy Times? Next Publishing: 2015 • ProformaBallot is assembly of all materials that have been balloted and approved by D1J, D1 Main Committee, and AASHTO SCOB. • Proforma Ballot has been assembled, not yet balloted.

  10. List of approved ballot items: • FC Preheat Tables • Vision Acuity for inspectors • Flange warpage and tilt • Web Distortion • Tub girders • PQR Limits • MT Yoke Lifting Power • DC Pulsed for MT • Various Figure 2.4 corrections of preapproved details

  11. List of approved ballot items (Cont.) • Weld Profiles • Preheat and Interpass measurements • Weld Backing • Grinding Undercut • Procedure Qualification • HPS 100W replaces 100W • Cored Wire Removal for FC commentary • Non-Standard Joint Details • Fillet Weld Soundness Requirements • PQR Heat Input Calculations

  12. What’s Up….. Ongoing Topics and Current Activities • Broken Tack Weld Commentary • PAUT • Reinforcement • Removal

  13. Ongoing Topics and Current Activities Frequent Fabrication Issues • Dimensional Tolerances for Rolled Beams • Bending Requirements • Laser and water-jet cutting • Assembly • The D1.5 code is a welding code and not a do all fabrication code. • Issues that need to be addressed what’s the right place and group, AASHTO, AWS, NSBA, ????

  14. A Closer Look at Changes Interesting for some… yet snoozer for others

  15. MT Error in Clause 6 table regarding lifting power of MT Yoke. • 10lbs lifting power needed for AC or DC Yokes. • Consistent with ASTM now. Added Pulsed DC as acceptable MT method.

  16. Tub Girders Change to 3.5.1.7 Address measuring warpage and tilt of flanges for on tub girders. Different when webs are not perpendicular to flanges

  17. Preheat and Interpass Clarified that preheat or minimum interpass temperature has to be maintained throughout welding the joint and 3” in all directions. Preheat measured at location of welding arc. Established that maximum interpass will be measure within 1”-3” from joint face edge just prior to next pass.

  18. Web Flatness Provided better instruction and description for proper ways of measuring web flatness. Revised Code and Commentary Added sketch to Commentary.

  19. Preapproved Joints Fixed a number of errors in the figures for preapproved joints. Clarified when reinforcing fillets are required.

  20. Weld Profiles Changes requested by AWS Certification Department to clarify acceptability of bead shape and undercut. Sets convexity limits. Clarifies removal of weld reinforcement Clarifies surface finish

  21. Weld Reinforcement Improved wording on how it should be done properly. Establishes criteria for unacceptable undergrinding when reinforcement is removed.

  22. Procedure Qualification • Significant changes in Procedure Qualification • Heat input qualification Continue to use variable limits but allow broader voltage with new amperage chart. • Production Procedure Qualification Removed variable limits and use variables as qualified by test (similar to D1.1) • Fillet Welds Single pass fillets no longer qualified by groove test but rather fillet weld soundness.

  23. PQR Duration Non-Fracture Critical – Valid indefinitely unless WPS produces substandard welds. FC – Extended to 5 year duration

  24. The End Means Grandpa’scoming home.
