5 Tips to Tackle SAT Mathematics Scholastic Aptitude Test sometimes also called the Scholastic Assessment Test or SATs is a standard examination widely used for college admissions in the USA. The SAT should take 3 hours to complete, and an additional 50 minutes for the SAT with an essay. Since 2015, the College Board, in association with Khan Academy, began working to provide SAT preparation free of cost. Let us now shift our focus to the Mathematics sections and discuss 5 SAT math tips, tricks and strategies to tackle it :- Make sure you have the SAT facts clear :- You should be aware that as of 2020, a 1539+ is equivalent to a perfect 1600. This is the threshold for top college admissions like Harvard, Columbia etc, and no such college will give you more credit for a score that exceeds 1539, and your chances of getting in now stand on the strength of your application. Scoring 1539 is not easy and Maths can indeed help you greatly in this aspect. The absoluteness of Quantitative aptitude is what enables high scoring and of course, perfect scoring opportunities, and that you must utilize to the fullest. Maths will compensate for other qualitative sections and boost your chances if you are applying for a major in say statistics, physics etc. The analysis shows that at least 25% of all students in colleges like MIT, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon have an 800 in SAT Maths. Therefore, setting a goal of 750 to 800 and nothing less, from the very start, is crucial. Do not think of it as difficult :-SAT maths is generally regarded as easy by most above-average students throughout the world and that is because it is. However, getting a perfect score is not and that itself, if you recall, is our target. The reason why many are unable to do so is that they haven’t mastered the SAT question pattern, they might not have studied consistently from the beginning or because they haven’t developed their concepts as much as they should have. The SAT is a standardised test and hence, it is advisable not to delve beyond the prescribed syllabus, but to have unparalleled problem-solving ability based upon the same set of topics. Therefore, sample questions and practice tests from renowned sources is the way to go! Such topics include basic algebra, advanced algebra, geometry 2D, 3D basic data interpretation etc. Manage your time accordingly:- As already stated, it is recommended to solve all the questions within the stipulated time limit. By taking a full-time practice test under ideal conditions, you will be aware of how much time you are taking per question. Also, make SAT math notes to solve those questions that you could not under the test time. Attempting these “extra time” questions
ensures that you haven’t left any stone unturned. Now, the trick is to bring down this “extra time” to 0. How to get a perfect score? To be a perfectionist is often understated but not here. If you are wondering how to get a 600 on sat math, you should start with being confident. Know where your weaknesses lie and have adequately worked upon them. Review every question that you were unsure of or had marked incorrectly and understood why you did so. Keep an organized view of which set of topics you tend to mess up. Also, keep a note of what type of mistake you are making: knowledge-based, or application based or a careless mistake etc. Even a single mistake can cost you. Stay calm during your result day :- Your result obviously depends on the day of the SAT. Hence it is important to have a calm mind, focused and fresh. Avoid any unhealthy indulgences prior and have the necessary stationery on you. As you give the exam, it is advisable to not solve one question fill one bubble but to fill the bubbles in mass. This will save you time and mental switching costs. Overtly depending upon the calculator is not good and use it only if you need to.
