  1. NB HMI series How to Rewrite the NB Kernel and Root File System.

  2. Introduction This document explains how a kernel and root file system can be recovered with NB Manager. Problem is mainly that the communication can not be established any more with a PC. The connected PC doesn’t recognize the NB anymore after downloading a project. (Windows 7 NB HMI driver; Devices and Printers) The cause of this can be that an old project, before version 1.23 has been downloaded to the NB without compiling. Please be aware that older versions (previous created project with an older version) needs to be compiled when they are opened in a newer version of NB-Designer. Also use always the latest version of NB-Designer. If the NB is selected for ‘Enable Printer Function’ in System Setting Mode it will show: (Windows 7; Devices and Printers) Enable Printer Function is possible since NB-Designer version 1.23 Change the option in System setting mode and try to connect with the PC again. If its not showing the Windows NB HMI driver then rewriting the Kernel and Root System Files probably solves the communication problem. All of the data will be lost after the update. NB Manager is a tool managing the whole NB-Designer software, which includes 6 operates, i.e. Download Operate, Upload Operate, System Operate, Get Version, Decompile Operate and Pass through Communication. 1. Connecting Method 2. Switch setting 3. Rewrite Kernel and Rootfs 4. Restart and Verify version Content Omron Europe 2

  3. 1. Connecting Methods USB Start NB Manager, in the Communication Set field click on the ‘Set’ button. Select communication type to USB. Note: if it’s not possible to communicate through USB port, then select in the Communication Type field, Serial or Ethernet port. Omron Europe 3

  4. 2. Switch Setting Turn the dip switches located at the backside of NB Unit to ON (SW1) and to OFF (SW2) to set the NB into ‘Downloader Mode’. In ‘Downloader Mode’ the connected PC will recognize the NB through USB connection. As mentioned above, the settings and corresponding operating modes of the switches SW1 and SW2 of NB3Q and NB10W are the same as those of NB5Q/NB7W (see the table above), and the functions of SW3 and SW4 of NB3Q and NB10W are stated as below: Omron Europe 4

  5. 3. Rewrite Kernel and Root file system Select the System Operate tab, click in the Set Section Area and perform the updates of Kernel and Root file system. Omron Europe 5

  6. 4. Restart and Verify version Turn the dip switches located at the backside of NB Unit to OFF (SW1) and to OFF (SW2) and restart the NB. Verify with NB Manager if the Kernel and Rootfs are updated. Note: Before downloading data into the NB please compile (menu: “compile all”) all you’re NB screen project data created by previous version of NB-Designer again using this NB-Designer V1.23.
