  7. What is Academic Language? Academic English .… • is the language of the classroom, of texts and literature, and extended, reasoned discourse. • refers to word knowledge that makes it possible for students to engage with, produce, and talk about texts valued in school. • is the language teachers and students use for the purpose of acquiring new knowledge and skills, imparting new information, and describing abstract ideas, and developing students’ conceptual understandings. • involves such things as relating an event to someone who was not present, making comparisons between alternatives and justifying a choice, knowing different forms and inflections of words and their appropriate use. Academic Vocabulary • Content Words: key vocabulary words, technical terms, and concepts associated with a particular topics such as solubility, cine, cosine, protagonist, theme. • Process/Function Words: words and phrases that have to do with functional language use, such as make a model, provide evidence, state a conclusion, explain the effect. • Words and word parts that teach English structure Short, Vogt, Echevarria (pp. 13-14)
