  3. Research data services • Technical advice, standards etc – DCC • Practitioner advice and guidance – UKRDS • Repositories (R data, R outputs, educational content) - Subject – RCs - Institution – HEIs : SHED shared service option

  4. UKRDS – practitioner advice Advice on: - what to save - how to save it - when to discard it - subject specialists

  5. 2009: seek clarity on policies such as: • ownership/IPR • how much to save • capital (start up) costs – funding service? • recurrent costs – long term sustainability • coherence across repositories • scope for creating a data management profession

  6. Governance options for UKRDS Depends on: - ownership – HEIs or FCs - responsibilities – to whom, for what - sustainability – business model - independence required – and from whom UKRDS is mainly advisory, not an authority or regulator

  7. Recommendation • HEI owned, possibly in receipt of a FC/JISC grant • Initially a formal partnership of HEIs under an MOU • Eventually a separate legal entity by subscription
