  1. Conceptual Designs Josh – Chris – Ed - Mark - Phill

  2. Last Week • Deliverables: • Problem Statement- Design a robust system that can be attached to existing residential attic stairs • Design Partition • Project Plan • Task Assignments

  3. 5 Designs • Sliding Rails- Telescopic Tube Frame • Cart on Rails • Cart with out Rails • Suspended Platform with Rails • Suspended Platform Without Rails

  4. 1.Telescopic Tube Frame The platform used to raise objects into the attic is attached to the end of a telescopic frame made with tubes of increasing diameter. A motorized wench will be used to raise and pull the platform into the attic by collapsing the frame.

  5. Roof Base Stationary Arms Winch Cable Attached Platform Motorized Winch Attic Floor Flexible Joint Telescopic Tube Frame Existing Tri-fold Ladder • Pros: • Ladder remains clear when climbing • Can be operated remotely • Object taken deeper into attic and away from opening • Requires little attic height • Cons: • Torque required to raise platform • Rotation of platform must be monitored • Must manually retrieve platform from attic before use SIDE VIEW (closed)

  6. Base Stationary Arms Motorized Winch Winch Cable Attic Floor Flexible Joint Telescopic Tube Frame Existing Tri-fold Ladder Attached Platform Ground Floor SIDE VIEW (open)

  7. Motorized Wench Base Stationary Arms Attic Floor Wench Cable Telescopic Tube Frame Existing Tri-fold Ladder Attached Platform Ground Floor FRONT VIEW

  8. 2 The Rolling Cart without Rails • Pros: • cheap • wide variety of applications • easy to install Motorized Wench • Cons: • Box must be closed • Box must be able to be tilted • must be brought to the edge manually Box

  9. 3. The Rolling Cart with Rails • Pros: • Wheel design minimized • Low Profile • Cons: • More material (rails) • adds width to ladder when folded • Rails must come in varying sizes

  10. 4 & 5 Suspended Platform with and without Rails • Cons: • adds width to ladder because of plates • fixed enclosure at top • winch & cable spool must also be on the movable slide • Pros: • Self Leveling • Can not be de-railed • Low Profile

  11. 5. Suspended Platform without Rails Same as #4 in concept only the wheels ride the top of the ladder • Pros: • Self Leveling • Can not berailed • Low Profile • Cons: • adds width to ladder because of plates • fixed enclosure at top • winch & cable spool must also be on the movable slide

  12. Next Week • Selection Analysis Develop critera necessary to evaluate the most important requirements of your design • Patent/Product Search Basic information. For patents give the title, patent number, and date. For products give the model name and manufacturer. Figure from the patent or of the product. For patents there is usually one on the first page that is used as for an overall description. (See USPTO for browser plug-ins to read the compressed tiff files.) Brief description of patent or product. (Patents are not easy to read and all group members should have the experience of reading and deciphering a patent!)
