  1. Multimedia applications and end systems Chao-kai Ching, George Lin, Yevgeniy Razuvayev Dept. of CS&E The Ohio State University Columbus OH 43210 (ching.17, lin.539, razuvayev.1)@osu.edu

  2. Outlines for Today • Introduction: • Multimedia & End systems in the future • Things Other than Computers • Telesurgery • Network based robot • Entertainment

  3. Live TV Over the Internet • Purpose • To watch live TV anywhere there is a high speed internet connection • To watch live TV from a far away location such as another country • To watch local TV while away from home • Hardware • TV2Me • Sling Box • Sony LocationFree • Software • Orb

  4. TV2Me • Preprocesses and encodes the video through hardware on the sending side • MPEG-4 encoder • Receiver side is software • Full Screen TV Quality video at 384 kbps • Point-to-point • Dell PC with a custom video capture board • $4750

  5. TV2Me (Continued) Source: www.tv2me.com

  6. MPEG-4 • An open international standard for multimedia

  7. Sling Box • Works like TV2Me • Encodes into Microsoft’s Media 9.0 format • Video quality worse than TV2Me • Works with 802.11b and 802.11g networks • Uses a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) made by Texas Instruments • Uses a proprietary steam optimization code-named “Lebowski” • $249.99

  8. Sony LocationFree • Base station behaves like TV2Me and Sling Box • Encodes in MPEG-4 • Works with LocationFree TV, PC, or the Sony PSP • Better in-home quality than TV2Me but worse quality over the internet • $349.99, $1499.99 with 12.1 inch LocationFree TV Source:www.sonystyle.com

  9. Orb • Software so no need to buy any hardware • Streams digital media from your home PC • Can use TV Tuner on home PC to stream live TV • Requires Windows XP Media Center • A free service. Just need to download the software and register an Orb user name and password • Can work with mobile phones and PDAs as well as laptops

  10. Wireless TV Summary • Hardware or software compresses live TV video and sends it over the internet • TV2Me has best quality over the internet but costs the most • Sling box and LocationFree have lower quality video than TV2Me but are priced for the mainstream market • Orb is a free application and service that uses your home computer to send digital media

  11. Remote Surgery • What is it? • When telerobotic systems meets telecommunication system • Physical Interaction • Motivation • Inconsistent Quality of Surgical Proficiency • Convenience • CHEAP !!!???

  12. Remote Surgery • The Robot – ZEUS • Two Components • Surgeon-side • Patient-side

  13. Telesurgical System Set Up

  14. Network Communication • 100 base-T ethernet • UDP/IP • A dedicated 10 Mb/s CBR ATM circuit with OC-3 fiber (155.52 Mbps)

  15. Things to Transmit • Video – 70% of bandwidth • Full-motion phase alternating line video displayed on a 21’’ high-resolution medical-grade monitor • UDP packet • From surgeon to patient • 152 bytes in size with 128 packets per second • From patient to surgeon • 88 bytes in size with 128 packets per second

  16. Communication Anomalies • Single- or multiple-bit errors in a packet or Fragment • Dropped packets • Delayed packets • Out of order packets • Their Solutions
