Internationalisation in Nursing and Higher Education – a long history • Sixty years ago, one in every 10 UK university students was not from the UK (Biggs, 2003) • the distinguished European universities had international perspectives when they were established in the 15th and 16th centuries (Healey 2008) • There are nurses everywhere in the world • Florence Nightingale, Mary Secole • Emergency and disaster relief • Migration and immigration • Approx 20% of new entrants to the NMC register each year are non UK (4/10 1997:2007 = 90000)

Internationalisation in Context - Nursing Enthusiasm of individual teachers drives teaching of internationalisation but as they have no shared concept there is no shared curriculum understanding (Svensson, Wihlborg, 1999) Internationalisation at the national/sector/institutional level is defined as the process of integrating an international, intercultural or global dimension into the purpose and functions or delivery of post secondary education” (Knight 2004)
