Historical Background • In the early 1800’s, American ships were boarded by the British in attempts to restrict U.S. trade. • Britain’s Royal Navy's impressment* of American seamen. • America's desire to expand its territory. **act of taking men into a navy by force and with or without notice.

  3. Social Issue • Do you think that Great Britain’s royal navy should be able to seize seamen serving on American ships? • How would you have felt as an American citizen at in the early 1800”s?

  4. Task • Working in Groups, research the War of 1812 to learn about the causes of the War. • Use different resources such as websites, encyclopedias, books, or your textbook.

  5. Must Do: Determine the Causes of the War of 1812 by completing the AHPPA Worksheets. (each student fills out their own worksheets to submit to teacher) Can Do: Take the point of view of either a British citizen or an American citizen and write a letter to a friend stating your opinion on one of the causes that you studied.

  6. Steps of the AHPPA Step 1 – Define the Problem Step 2 – Gather Evidence Step 3 – Determine the Causes Step 4 – Evaluate the Policy In your own words, describe the causes of the War of 1812 using the websites.
