  2. History • Muhammad (A.D. 570-632) • Ramadan the 26th in 610 A.D. – The recitation of the Qur’an begins • July 16, 622 – Hegira (Hijra) – from Mecca to Medina • By 630, Muhammad takes Mecca • Extreme growth in its first 2 centuries of existence • Today, an estimated 1 billion worldwide – 69% live in South & Southeast Asia; 27% in Africa; 4% other – Perhaps as many as 8 million in the US.

  3. Why a World Religion? • Jesus is a prophet but not the Son of God. • Jesus wasn’t even really crucified! • The Qur’an supersedes and corrects errors in the Bible. • Salvation: submitting to the will of Allah and hoping he shows you mercy. If your good outweighs your bad, you may be granted “paradise.” • No trinity!

  4. Some Islam Beliefs… • The Five Pillars: • Confession of Faith (Shahada) • Prayer (Salat) • Almsgiving (Zakat) • The Fast (Sawm) • Pilgrimage (Hajj) • No sin, but beware of “shirk.” • Marriage upheld, but women not equal. • Dietary codes! • The infamous “jihad.” • People of the book and infidels!

  5. Oops! • Christians in Islamic countries not enjoying the freedom Muslims do here. • Is Islam a peace-loving religion? • Sects within Islam • Sensual paradise??? • Growth by the sword!

  6. Our Response • Be courteous and loving, willing to show interest in their beliefs. • Be acquainted with their basic beliefs. • Be willing to be a friend and to share the gospel to a Muslim.

  7. The Final Word • Genesis 16:6-12 • Matthew 5:3-12 • Matthew 5:13-16 www.carm.org

  8. Gen 16:1-12 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said to Abram, "Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. And Sarai said to Abram, "May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me!" But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please." Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her. The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. And he said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She said, "I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai." The angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress and submit to her." The angel of the LORD also said to her, "I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude." And the angel of the LORD said to her, "Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has listened to your affliction. He shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen."

  9. Matt 5:3-12 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  10. Matt 5:13-16 "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
