  1. Improving your vocabulary • The following slides slowly show you derivatives of a common base word. These words are found in the Academic Word List – a list of the most common words needed to function well in an academic setting. • At the top of the presentation is a comment on how the word is formed (the meanings of the roots, etc) • In the middle of the presentation are various derivational changes. A noun will change its form to become an adjective etc. As you click to reveal more different forms, constantly ask yourself the question – are these forms in my “active repertoire” ? • Usually at the end of the presentation there is an arrow, and then a word which adopts a similar root, but is a completely different word with a different meaning. So instead of going DEEP (vertically) as you did with the derivatives - inside the way a word can change, I invite you to go FAR (horizontally) across many new, related words. • The idea here is that you let your mind receptively input the words you see. Don’t work too hard. Just let the words enter your mind. Listening to music while watching this presentation may help.
