We already learned that temperature changes with elevation. Pressure of the atmosphere decreases with Altitude. Air molecules on top press on lower air molecules, causing greater pressure at lower elevations. This, of course, is due to gravity pulling on the air molecules.

  1. We already learned that temperature changes with elevation. Pressure of the atmosphere decreases with Altitude Air molecules on top press on lower air molecules, causing greater pressure at lower elevations. This, of course, is due to gravity pulling on the air molecules.

  3. The CO2 - O2 Cycle Plants and animals cause a cycling of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air. Plants take in CO2 and give off oxygen. Animals give off CO2 and take in oxygen. This is part of the carbon cycle.

  4. The Nitrogen Cycle The major component of the atmosphere, nitrogen, is also cycled through the earth spheres. Nitrogen is needed by plants and animals to make amino acids, but they can’t “breathe” nitrogen from the air, so the process by which they get it is more complicated. Bacteria or lightning change the nitrogen to nitrates, which is used by the organisms. Other bacteria change the nitrates in organic matter back to nitrogen which goes back in the air.
