HISTORIA • La primera descripción fue hecha en un papiro de un túmulo en Tebas. • Areteu de Capadocia (médico griego del siglo II a.C.) acuñó el término de diabetes (griego) pasar a través, sifón. • En el siglo V, Susruta y Charaka distinguieron 2 tipos de diabetes. • Thomas Willis (1621-1675), en Oxford, reconoce a la enfermedad como de la sangre y no de los riñones. • Thomas Cawley, en 1788, hace referencia al páncreas (autopsias). • En 1796, John Rollo, cirujano inglés propuso restricción de carbohidratos y describe aliento cetónico. • Banting, Best, Collip y Mc Leod; premio Nóbel en 1923 por descubrimiento de la insulina y su aplicación clínica.
