  1. English Department Hiring Justification Fall 2016

  2. We have the students • Our department FTEF (productivity) has increased from 9.27 in Fall 2009 to 12.6 in Fall 2016, meaning we have the load for at least 12 FT faculty. • More than half of our courses are taught by part time faculty.

  3. Beyond our FTEF, our classes are FULL (often too full) • In 13/14 our fill rate was 89.7% and last year our fill rates were 93.1%. This semester our fill rates are 95%. • While we have kept these high fill rates, we have also increased the number of sections we offer. Over the last 6 years we have increased our sections offered from 84-126 in 14-15 (an increase of almost 50%).

  6. In Response to State Initiatives and Changes in Our Field, Our Department is Developing Programs and Courses • Student equity • More integrated and accelerated courses • Extended composition courses (higher unit load with more support) • Men of color • Basic skills retention/success • Common Assessment • Creative writing club

  7. Specialized Adjuncts are Scarce • Our department accelerated/integrated English courses: • Require faculty versed in reading and composition pedagogy • Require well-trained faculty who are hard to find According to our dean, David Johnson, the last few semesters we have had to scramble to fill or cancel courses because we cannot find adjuncts to teach them.
