  2. Fundamentals of Licensing • What is a license? • The legal right to use Software • There are 2 main types of license: • Perpetual right to use (own rights) • Non Perpetual (rent rights) • Buy licenses • Individually (1-4) – FPP or OEM • Volume (5+)- Open, Open Value Subscription

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) • Advantages: • Lower Cost way to buy Software • All pre-installed • Good if buying new hardware too • Disadvantages • Software dies with hardware • No transfer rights • No downgrade rights • Activation – to reduce piracy • Proof of purchase complex Sa option within 90 days
