    2. Changing Lifestyle Workers could earn more in factories People started moving to cities—urbanization Jobs and products were in the cities Factories built near natural resources (p.281) London became largest city in Europe

    3. Living Conditions Living conditions were very bad No development, sanitary, or building codes Lack of housing, police, and education Families lived in one bedroom apartments Widespread disease (life expectancy was 17 years in cities) (38 years in the country) Merchants and factory owners built mansions in the suburbs

    4. Working Conditions Average factory worker (14 hours per day, 6 days per week) Factories were not well lit or clean Workers lost limbs or died in explosions No government aid if you were hurt Most dangerous conditions were in coal mines Life span of coal mine workers (10 years less than other jobs)

    5. Class Tensions Grow Growing middle class of factory owners, shippers and merchants Middle class was looked down on by the rich landowners and aristocrats Eventually separated into upper and lower middle class Working class--often replaced by machines Destroyed machines to keep jobs

    6. Positive Effects of Industrial Rev. Created new jobs for workers Contributed to the wealth of England New inventions and technology Raised the standard of living Cheaper clothes,more educational opportunities Eventually labor unions are formed Products today were luxury items before—now very affordable
