  1. CT108 – Energy Audit Assignment

  2. Top Down And Bottom Up Approach The Top Down Approach The “top down” approach assesses the total energy inputs which are typically given as using my annual electricity bill to calculate 20 cents /kWhr as a conversion. In the same vein, I will be using my annual heating oil bill and calculating 65 cent per litre for my heating oil. The Bottom Up Approach This approach requires a detailed analysis of the principal sources of energy usage in my home. The Bottom Up approach will also tie into my Website created using Javascript to effectively read in data and give me statistical and analytical information which will give me a good idea about how energy is being used in my home.

  3. My Formula for working out Electrical Usage: • (Wattage × Hours Used Per Day X Days Per Year) / 1000 • So, for example, my 200w personal computer (K45 Shuttle) will use: • (200 Watts × 4 hours/day × 360 days/year)  ÷  1000= 288 kWh × 20 cents/kWh= E57.60 Per Year To Run

  4. My Formula for working out Oil Consumption: • 1000L oil / 3 Radiators = 333 Litres of oil per radiator per year. • 4h per day usage X 360 = 1440 hours worth of oil usage.

  5. What I Hope To Learn / Explore From This Assignment: • I hope to be able to calculate (with some degree of closeness) my house’ entire yearly energy consumption, and that will relate to how much my annual heating and fuel bill actually is. In other words, by nominating all electrical appliances in my home, (and discovering their wattage and power consumption) and calculating how much I use them on a daily, weekly, and eventual annual basis, I hope to come to a conclusion (kWh’s of energy used, along with a monetary value for that) which is close to the amount I am actually charged by the ESB and my oil company. I also hope to learn which appliances are the most power consuming within my home. Ultimately, by finding this out on an overview level, I can attempt to use them less, or even more wisely.
