If you’re the type of person who has an annual vacation that you look forward to every year, do you ever find that you put yourself under intense pressure to ensure that the vacation is as perfect as it can be? With just one opportunity a year to have some time away from work or other constraints with friends or family, do you feel that if your vacation is not perfect in every way, then somehow you have failed and wasted your chance? Annual vacations can induce a lot of anxiety, and for some vacation goers, they worry and fret about all the things that could go wrong and that could make their precious break, less than perfect. Here are just a few of the things that could go wrong on a vacation, annual or otherwise, and what you can do to try and combat or alleviate them:
Weather: While some more easy-going vacationers take inclement weather in their stride, for others it can have a devastating effect on their trip. So, what can you do to limit the chances of the weather ruining your vacation? Research – for many countries, their weather is relatively predictable, and so you should be able to plan which time of the year to visit depending upon the weather conditions. Of course, mother nature can throw all sorts of surprises at us and what should be a hot and dry summer, can just as easily become a cold and wet one, but there’s really not a lot you can do about that except adapt and overcome!
Less than perfect travel companions: If you are travelling with someone for the first time, you may discover that once you’ve reached your vacation destination, they suddenly turn into someone that you never knew existed! Whether they complain all the time or try to take over the planning for entertainment and day trips etc, travel companions can quickly turn a vacation sour. Is there anything that you can do to reduce the risk of a travel companion ruining your vacation? Communication – Try to make sure – before you even begin planning your vacation, certainly before you arrive at your destination – that you and any travel
companions are clear about what the vacation will entail. Even if you have different expectations, that isn’t necessarily a recipe for disaster provided you make your thoughts and opinions clear to each other. Transport: Flights can unexpectedly get cancelled, cars can break down and public transport can be delayed. While you may not be able to control these things, they can still hinder and spoil a well-planned vacation. What steps can you take to make sure that transport arrangements run as smoothly as possible?
Timeliness and attitude – be on time for transport that you have booked, arriving early wherever possible to allow for traffic jams and other unexpected issues. If a flight is cancelled, try not to panic or get angry and accept that you may lose a little of your vacation time. If transport is cancelled through no fault of your own, you should always be able to claim a refund or book alternative transport. Sickness or injury: Eating food that your stomach may not be used to or having an accident while trying a new form of entertainment or sport, are both factors that can occur while you’re on vacation, and depending on their severity, may cause innumerable
problems while you’re away from home. Is there anything that you can do to minimise these risks? Research and caution – trying new and exotic foods can be exciting but try to visit restaurants or cafes that have a reputation for hygiene and good food standard practices; you can read theirreviews on any number of sites. Check that food items are cooked thoroughly before you eat them, and always ask if the table water is bottled if you’re in a country where the water is not safe for tourists to consume.
When you’re trying out new activities, always follow the safety advice given and if something looks too dangerous, it probably is! Try to forget about having the perfect vacation, and focus instead on having fun and being spontaneous, because if you don’t, your vacation could be over before you’ve even had a chance to think about what you might have missed out on. Forget perfection. The higher your expectation, the more disappointment you will feel if something goes wrong. If you can go with the flow and enjoy the time you have, no matter the mishaps, the more enjoyable your holiday will be. I promise!
