You’ve heard it before, but it’s time to start listening. Step away from the scale and assess your fitness progress by how you feel, how you look and how your clothes fit. Weight is a poor indicator of progress for many reasons, among the most prominent is that muscle weighs more than fat.

Don’t do the hardest exercise, or the exercise your friends are doing, do an exercise that makes you happy. If yoga or hiking makes you happy, for example, do those instead of lifting weights or running on a treadmill. Pay attention to your post-workout mood, too, and look for one that leaves you feeling excited for more.

Take Rest Seriously

If you exercise five days a week, you have two rest days and you should use them well. Don’t just skip being active on rest days. Take a page from Albert Cyprys of New York City, NY, and use your rest days to seriously help your body heal and recover. Yin yoga, gentle stretching or a thirty-minute walk are examples of positive rest day choices.
