Father – Joaquin Temistocles Freire Officer of the Pernambuco Military police Suffered from Heart Condition forcing him to retire early Died in 1933 – when Paulo was 13 Paulo described him as “a living example of the human qualities of generosity, solidarity, and humility, without any sacrifice to his dignity” Mother – Edeltrudis Veves Freire Primary religious influence in the family Taught Paulo how to read, write, and draw Found a way to educate Paulo Father and Mother

Education • Attended Oswaldo Cruz Private High School • Had trouble in school • Law School at University Of Recife in 1943 • Also studied philosophy, linguisties, and the psychology of language • Married Elza Maria Costa De Oliveira in 1944 • A primary school teacher • Had five children • Graduated and passed the bar in 1947 • Lawyer or an educator???

Paulo Freire Institute • Our roots go back to work undertaken in the 1970s and 1980s by the Paris-based INODEP (Ecumenical Institute for the Development of Peoples), whose founder and first president was Paulo Freire. • Mission Statement: • Social inclusion is a social value and aim of contemporary Maltese Society.  Yet some citizens still have to be helped to stand up for their rights and to participate fully in Maltese Society.
