  3. Intellectual Development • Track objects that move and make sounds • Cries, coos, gurgles, grunts to communicate

Social/Emotional Development • Communicates needs through crying (spoiling vs. trust=should respond to cries quickly; important to emotional development) • Hunger/thirst • Wet diapers • Stomach aches • Need to burp • Too warm/cold • Light or noise • Need to be held • Enjoys being touched, held, talked and sung to • Recognizes human face • Smiles

  5. What is the main goal of newborns? • Establish TRUST and SECURE attachments with caregivers.
