  1. POLLINATOR ISSUES IN GUINEABee Summit in Durban1-4 JULY 2008 Saidou Doumbouya

  2. Bee Summit in Durban • My intervention is not one of a specialist on the matter, but it is mainly based on a very significant aspect which holds the attention of my service: INDIRECT BENEFIT OF The BEE-KEEPING.

  3. Bee Summit in Durban • My service is called National Center of Observation and Environmental Follow-up • It has the role of following the evolution of the state of the environment in my country. • It advices the State for decision-making.

  4. Bee Summit in Durban • One of its programmes in the development of the environmental profile of the country is to carry out an inventory of the insects. • Bees occupy a significant place. • There is very little knowledge about Bees even though they render enormous services (INDIRECT BENEFIT OF the BEE-KEEPING).

  5. Bee Summit in Durban The aims of this project : • To sensitise farmers/bee-keepers on the indirect benefit of beekeeping ; • To train the bee-keepers on the good practices of their activity; • To make an inventory of the species of pollinating insects; • To create a data base on the pollinators.

  6. Bee Summit in Durban • Apart from intellectuals and scientists, who know the impacts of bees on agricultural production, majority of the population recognize them only as honey producers.

  7. Bee Summit in Durban • Problems : • The bad practices of honey harvest cause significant damage to various colonies of bees and consequently reduces the benefit of their activities. • During harvest time, the bee-keeper uses fire to protect themselves from the sting of the bees. • The consequences of this method is reduction in agricultural production.

  8. Bee Summit in Durban • In Guinea, bee-keeping is practised on the three natural areas out of four. • The climatic conditions and the vegetation are favourable for beekeeping. • ¶In the central area of the country there is a park call Parc National du Haut Niger. • The managers of the park noted that bad practices of honey harvest constantly caused bush fires in the development area of the park. • To fight against the phenomenon, they initiated the training of the bee-keepers on good practices of honey harvest.

  9. Bee Summit in Durban The Parc ( PNHN) • the Park is geographically located in High Guinea and occupies a surface of 52 400 ha.

  10. Bee Summit in Durban • The objectives of the training are: - Fight against the bush fire; - To create an outlet for honey producers to market their products.

  11. Bee Summit in Durban • In order to motivate the producers to take part in the training, they are promised beekeeping equipment. • This training does not take into account the aspect pollination due to lack of information to the organizers. • There is need for extending this training into other areas of the country and also improve the contents of the training scheme.

  12. Bee Summit in Durban • My participation as a representative from Guinea is an opportunity: • To meet other people in the area of bee pollination in other to create awareness back home • To share experiences with others • To develop networks
