  1. Chapter 3: Section 1  Entry Task You’re sitting in math class, minding your own business, when in walks a Bill Gates kind of guy – the real success story of Southridge. He’s made it big, and now he has a job offer for you. He doesn’t give too many details, mumbles something about the possibility of danger. He’s going to need you for 30 days, and you’ll have to miss school. (Won’t that just be too awful?) You’ll have to make sure your passport is current. You start to tune him out, but then he says you’ll have your choice of two payment options: Option 1: One cent on the first day, two cents on the second day, and double your salary every day thereafter for the 30 days. Option 2: Exactly $1,000,000. All students are listening now. Many jump out of their seats. You yell you’ve got your man, Bill, right here! Will you take the million or take a penny payment on day 1? Justify your answer.

  2. $5.12 $5,242.88 $5,368,709.12

  3. When in doubt, plot points. y = 2x Graph x y x y 1 0 2 1 1/2 -1 4 2 -2 3 1/4 8 16 4 -3 1/8 32 5

  4. Exponential Function: y = ax What happens as a gets larger? y = 2x y = 3x Climbs Faster Diving Faster

  5. y = 2x Graph y = 2x+1 LEFT 1

  6. y = 2x Graph y = 2x-1 RIGHT 1

  7. y = 2x Graph y = 2x +1 UP 1

  8. y = 2x Graph y = 2x -1 DOWN 1

  9. y = 2x Graph y = 2-x REFLECT X-AXIS

  10. y = 2x Let x=4 =-1*2*2*2*2 = -16 Graph -24 ≠ 16 y = -2x REFLECT Y-AXIS

  11. Now let me show you math man and lets do a few on the board. y = 3x y = -3x y = 3-x y = 3x+2 y = 3x - 4 y = -3x+1 y = 3-x+1 y = -5+3x+1 y = -3x - 2 y = -3x+1+4

  12. If an = am , then n=m Solve 16 = 2x+2 24= 2x+2 Strategy Force base numbers to be equal. 4 = x + 2 X = 2

  13. If an = am , then n=m Solve 9 = 3x+1 32= 3x+1 Strategy Force base numbers to be equal. 2 = x + 1 X = 1
