  2. Ready to write! Take your notes into expanded form

  3. Start with your introduction • Hooks for reports will typically start with interesting information to grab the reader. • The remaining introduction in a report will give the reader a preview of what they will read. • Consider what information will capture your reader’s interest. • Summarize the content

  4. Example Introduction: Saguaros are common cacti mainly found in Arizona. They may live for more than 150 years, while growing 13.8 meters (45.3 ft) tall, with a girth of 3.1 meters (10 ft). All Saguaros differ in size and in the number of arms they have. Saguaros have adapted to limited rainfall and thrive in this arid region. If one were to view a Saguaro in late spring you might find them blooming gorgeous flowers and plumpy fruit.

  5. Work on your main ideas • What will your topic sentence be? • How will that sound Example: Saguaro cacti often times grow arms, while each cacti can vary in the number of arms they have.

  6. Follow-up with your details and transition sentence • Use your own words • How would you explain it? • Does it make sense and sound right? • Try it out-loud first

  7. Follow-up with your details and transition sentence Example Saguaro cacti often times grow arms, while each cacti can vary in the number of arms they have. The arms of a saguaro take 75 years to develop. The arms are grown to develop reproductive capacity. The number of arms observed to be found on a saguaro is dependent upon rain patterns. The greater amounts of rain in the area, the greater number of arms will be observed on the cacti.

  8. Closing paragraph In a report a closing paragraph should -Summarize the information -Suggest a use for the information -Consider further study or research

  9. Example closing The saguaro cactus is a fascinating and beautiful plant. However, if you ever find yourself in the desert feeling very thirsty, you just might have a resource to find a drink. Just be careful, with the size of those large cacti, it sure would hurt if it fell on you. How much do those things weigh anyway?

  10. Publish • Consider the form: booklet, poster, photos or slides, dioramas, time-lines, photo albums • How do other expository forms of writing look? • Are tables of contents or indices appropriate? • Include headings • Which illustrations or graphics might prove helpful for your reader? • What captions could you include with your illustrations?

  11. Audiocassettes Models Charts Phots Drawings Transparencies Mobiles Cd-Roms Slides Maps Cartoons Multimedia Collages Posters Filmstrips Videocassettes Paintings Additional aids to enhance

  12. The Oral Presentation • Speak loudly • Speak slowly • Use correct pronunciation and phrasing • Know it well enough that you mustn’t read
