Site Description The Child Development Center (CDC) is a preschool that serves both typical children and those with special needs from ages two to five. The CDC is a United Way Partner Agency and a non-profit agency. They off individualized educational programming, high risk intervention, and speech, occupational, and physical therapy. The children are taught in small classrooms with highly certified staff. The CDC started out as a Sunday School classroom at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church. This previous September the CDC celebrated their 50th anniversary.
The CDC also focuses on teaching all the children sign language. Its used to communicate with the many children who attend CDC who are non-verbal such as those with down syndrome or autism. This is just another tool to unite the gab between typical and special needs children. I had some basic sign language down but through doing my practicum here I now know a lot more words to use while working with the children.
Practicum Duties The CDC was very gracious enough to allow me to work in a morning classroom as well as one in the afternoon. I went there about three to four days a week. My duties included: • Supervising the children • Playing with the children • Teaching the children colors, numbers, basic writing skills, letters, etc. • Helping keep the children in order and disciplining when necessary • Offering comfort to the children when needed such as if they got hurt
Recommendation I would definitely recommend this site to other people. I enjoyed working with the children and I learned a lot from the teachers whose classrooms I worked in. Other students who are interested in pursuing a career working with children especially those with special needs would enjoy this site. Also anyone who is interested in occupational or speech therapy with children would have a chance to observe this aspect of psychology as well.
