  3. Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

  4. What This Presentation Will Do For You • Help you become more comfortable with the uses of and distinctions among quotations, paraphrases, and summaries

  5. What’s the Standard? • ELA8W3 The student uses research and technology to support writing. The student • a. Plans and conducts multiple-step information searches by using computer networks and modems. • b. Achieves an effective balance between researched information and original ideas. • c. Avoids plagiarism.

  6. What are the differences among quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing?

  7. Quotations • Quotations must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the source. (Don’t copy page after page of material.) • They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author.

  8. Paraphrases • Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from source material into your own words. • A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source.

  9. Summaries • Summarizing involves putting the main idea into your own words, including only the main point. • Once again, it is necessary to attribute summarized ideas to the original source. • Summaries are much shorter than the original and take a broad overview of the source material.

  10. Why use quotations, paraphrases, and summaries?

  11. You might use them to . . . • Provide support for claims or add credibility to your writing • Give examples of several points of view on a subject • Highlight a particularly striking phrase, sentence, or passage by quoting the original

  12. How to use quotations, paraphrases, and summaries

  13. Follow these steps: • Read the entire text, noting the key points and main ideas. • Summarize in your own words what the single main idea of the essay is. • Paraphrase important supporting points that come up in the essay. • Consider any words, phrases, or brief passages that you believe should be quoted directly.

  14. How Do You Paraphrase Effectively?

  15. How To Paraphrase • Reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning. • Set the original aside, and write your paraphrase on a note card. • Check your rendition against the original to make sure that your version accurately expresses all the essential information in a new form. • Use quotation marks to identify a word or phrase you have borrowed exactly from the source. • Record the source (including the page) on your note card so that you can credit it easily if you decide to incorporate the material into your paper.

  16. Homework • Read “So That Nobody Has To Go To School If They Don’t Want To.” • Write a 1-paragraph paraphrase of Sipher’s reasons why students shouldn’t be forced to attend school. • Write a 1-paragraph summary of the 5 benefits of doing away with mandatory attendance laws.
