  1. Viewing The Sun Larry Combs and Msgt. Bill Murtagh NOAA Space Environment Center H-alpha (Full Disk) Extreme Ultra Violet – Fe XII Abstract Observing the Photosphere for: - Solar flares - Filaments, - Prominences - Fine structure of active regions. USAF Ramey Observatory, PR • Observing the Corona for: • - Active regions • Filament eruptions • Coronal holes • Coronal “bright • points” • SOHO/EIT We view the Sun through many wavelengths, giving a picture of its various features. Images are obtained from a network of ground-based and space-based observatories that enable a comprehensive solar analysis. Detailed analysis of these images provide critical information for forecasting solar activity, while providing essential data in research efforts. This poster provides a sample of some images regularly used at SEC LASCO C2 Coronagraph H-Alpha (Large Scale) 1083.0 nm HeI • Observing the Corona with coverage extending from 2.0 to 6.0 Rsun for: • - Coronal mass • ejections (CME) • CME velocity and • direction • SOHO/LASCO • Observing the • Photosphere close-up for: • - Active regions • - Solar flares • Filament activation • Limb features (loops, • prominence eruption, etc) • Region development or • decay • USAF Learmonth • Observatory, AU • Observing the • Chromosphere for: • - Coronal hole boundaries • and position • NSO Kitt Peak • Observatory, AZ HIOKGU 854.2 nm CaII YOHKOH X-Ray Imager White Light • Observing the Corona in Soft X-rays for: • Coronal hole size and • locations • Filament channels • Active regions • Pre-eruption • signatures (Sigmoids) • YOHKOH/SXT • hjk Observing the solar magnetic field strength and polarity for: - Magnetic complexity of active regions - Magnetic field polarity NSO Kitt Peak Observatory, AZ Observing White Light for: - Flare potential - Spot group classification - Sunspot decay or growth - Magnetic complexity USAF Holloman Observatory, NM
