  2. Reflection Question What is the very first thing that comes to mind when you think of the word: TRANSGENDER

  3. Trans Terms • Sex: • being male or female, as determined by chromosomes and body chemistry. • Sexism: • behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex. • Transgender: • an umbrella term that applies to a broad range of people who experience and/or express their gender differently from what most people expect. • Transsexual: • a person who, with or without medical treatment, identifies and lives his or her life as a member of the gender other than the one assigned at birth. • Gender: • expressed in terms of masculinity or femininity. Largely culturally determined, it is how people perceive themselves and expect others to behave. It involves assigned gender (gender designated at birth), gender roles (how one is expected to behave based on gender), gender attribution (how others perceive someone’s gender) and gender identity (how an individual defines their gender). • Gender Identity: • an individual’s internal self-awareness of being male or female, feminine or masculine, or something in between.
