  2. Freytag’s Dramatic Structure Inciting Incident Resolution

  3. Usually the climax doesn’t happen until the end of the story.

  4. Exposition -Setting the scene. The writer introduces the characters and setting providing details and background • Inciting Incident – Something happens to begin the action. A SINGLE EVENT that usually signals the beginning of the main conflict. The “complication” • Rising Action – events that happen that allows the story to build and get more exciting.

  5. 4. Climax – The moment of greatest TENSION in the story. The most exciting event. The event that the rising action builds up to. Usually near the end of a story. 5. Falling Action- the events that happen as a result of the climax. We know that the story will soon end. 6. Resolution –The characters solves the main problem/conflict, or someone solves it for him or her. In some stories the problem is not solved – in these stories the ending turns out really terrible for everyone.

  6. 7. Denouement – The ending. At this point, any remaining secrets, questions or mysteries which remain after the resolution are solved by the characters or explained by the author. The author leaves us to think about the THEME or future possibilities for the characters. Very closely tied to the resolution.

We find out Scar is not happy with his pace in the pack Everyone is happy and a new baby is born Scar takes over. Pride is famished. Nala leaves to get simba Mufasa is killed and Simba runs away Simba takes his place as king

Why is using Freytag’s Dramatic Structure in a non-fiction piece beneficial to both the writer and reader? • Using Freytag’s Dramatic Structure in a non-fiction piece is beneficial for a writer because it creates structure and organization. It is beneficial for a reader because it makes the story more interesting and enjoyable to read by including things such as introduction of characters, rising action, climax, etc.

  9. 2. In you own words please write a definition of activism and give a brief example. • Activism is a movement to try and create social, political or environmental change. An example would be how Rosa Parks fought for the Civil Rights movement by not giving up her seat on a bus.

  10. 3. Who is the author of The Translator? Why did he decide to write it? • The author of The Translator is Daoud Hari. He decided to write The Translator to share what was happening in Darfur with the rest of the world. His hope was to educate people of the terrible things happening so that the people of the world would take action to help the people in Darfur.

  11. What is genocide? What is happening in Darfur that is considered Genocide? Genocide is a mass murder/wiping out of a certain group of people based on religion, race, ethnicity, etc. In Darfur the Sudan government has hired the Janjaweed to destroy all of the indigenous African people.

  12. What elements do memoirs include? • Told from first person point of view • Centered around a specific memory or a specific time in the author’s life. • Personal narrative • Must be a true account • Includes Freytag’s Dramatic Structure

Practice – Partner Work! • Choose a partner • Get a piece of butcher paper • Pick Disney Movie out of a hat • Draw Freytag’s Pyramid on butcher paper • With your partner outline your movie on Freytag’s structure (Like I did for The Lion King) • On a piece of notebook paper explain each of Freytag’s elements for your move – give a detailed explanation of each event AND how you know that it is the: exposition, inciting incident, etc. • You must also identify the THEME or MESSAGE of the movie you are assigned.

Expectations • If you are not working effectively with a partner you will be asked to go back to your seat and work alone • Make the poster legible and ACCURATE – use your notes on Freytag’s Structure to help you! • On your notebook paper write legibly and in complete sentences • No IPODS, CELL PHONES, or TABLETS
