  5. What was Hiawatha like then? • At first – he was a peaceful man • Then, after death of 3 daughters – fierce cannibal

  6. How he changed • Meets Dekanawida • They have a vision: • Create peace • Unite five Iroquois' nations

  7. What he did United tribes into the Iroquois confederacy • All tribes had chiefs in confederacy • Chiefs voted in and out by women in tribe

  8. What he did He also created rules to break the cycle of violence & provide justice • Murderer had to give life to family of killed • Wampum used like money to pay back family too

  9. Why its important • Message - peace is possible even in the toughest of times • Confederacy – model for U.S. Government
