What are Martial Arts? • Mixed martial arts is a combat sport in which incorporates techniques involving ground fighting (grappling), as well as stand up striking. • There are a variety of sports that fall under the category of mixed martial arts including boxing, kickboxing, jiujitsu, muaythai, karate, and other styles. • MMA is used as a form of self defense and protection, as well as used in multiple avenues of competition.

  3. What benefits will come to the students with the incorporation of MMA? • Instills confidence in children; teaching them discipline while building character. • Develops responsibility and perseverance in the student due to the set rules and regulations of the sport. • Works as a form of anger management, helping to control one’s ongoing emotional changes while reducing negative behavior. • Builds on the physical activity of the student, opening a new avenue to encourage lifelong fitness.

  5. Mixed Martial Arts in the Physical Education setting. MMA Physical Education Lesson Plans for K-12 • Self defense in martial arts focuses on balance, coordination, agility, power, speed, endurance, and flexibility. • Throughout Physical Education class, students will be striking & kicking bags, shields, and mitts that either are standing or hanging safely, or held by the educator. • Anxiety management, skill practice, team unity, psychomotor skill improvement.

Which style of MMA is right for you? • Decide the reasons why you want to join: increase flexibility, lose weight, self defense, etc. • In Physical Education, our focus will be on self defense in various styles to incorporate each athletic ability, including all of the following: boxing, kickboxing, jiujitsu, muaythai, and karate. • Each student will learn and participate in each martial arts style.

Boxing is a combat sport in which two people battle against each other using only their fists. • The fighters can used a variety of punches: upper cuts, hooks, jabs, crosses. • During a boxing match, there is a series of rounds with a short break in between each. • Boxing requires one referee in the ring with the fighters at all times, along with a scoring table of judges who total up the fighters points at the end of the final round.   8. Kickboxing • Kickboxing is a combat sport involving the contact of kicking and punching. • It is considered a stand up combat fight. • Kickboxing uses the same punches and basic rules as boxing, but ties in the usage of kicking as well.

  9. JiuJitsu • Jiujitsu is a ground fighting combat sport, mostly specializing in self defense and grappling. • It teaches form and technique, showing weaker and smaller individuals how to fend off bigger opponents. • This sport focuses on a lot of joint locks and chokeholds, rather than quick strikes in kicks and punches.

MuayThai • Muaythai is a stand up combat sport that allows a variety of techniques to defeat the opponent. • It is most related to kickboxing, in that it incorporates the use of kicking a striking. • One of the biggest differences between muaythai and kickboxing is that in muaythai, more forms of punches are considered legal hits.

Karate • Karate allows for the use of punching, elbow strikes, kicking, knee strikes, grappling, and a variety of open hand techniques. • It is considered an art of striking. • Many karate classes teach the art of defending oneself in a defenseless situation. • Out of all the various forms of martial arts, karate is one of the easiest to learn, with simple steps allowing for quick learning from the basic beginners.

  12. Bullying is unaccepted and never tolerated in our schools. Martial Arts teaches RESPECT.

  13. Martial Arts teaches DISCIPLINE. Students follow the orders for each task under strict guidelines in order to complete each stepping stone.

  14. The belief in oneself comes with seeing what each student is capable of. Martial Arts instills CONFIDENCE.

  15. Martial Arts increases FLEXIBILITY. Greater flexibility allows for a broader range of motion through kicking, striking, and grappling.

  16. Martial Arts teaches SPATIAL AWARENESS. Spatial awareness is needed to perform the proper techniques safely and efficiently.

  17. Martial Arts increases PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. Such activities are new and exciting, giving students more opportunity to get involved in fitness.

  18. Tasks will not be completed unless students cooperate, focus, and practice, practice, practice. Martial Arts encourages PERSEVERENCE.

  19. Martial Arts prepares students for ADULTHOOD. MMA is a sport that is offered around the nation to a wide variety of ages, and such will benefit the student for the rest of their life.

  20. Martial Arts is PHYSICAL EDUCATION!!!
