  24. Advertisement Advertisingis a form of communication intended to persuade an audience (viewers, readers or listeners) to take some action. It usually includes the name of a product or service and how that product or service could benefit the consumer, to persuade potential customers to purchase or to consume that particular brand.

Why? • What is the most important feature for you in using this product?

  26. Announcement An announcement is a statement made to the public or to the media which gives information about something that has happened or that will happen. An announcement in a public place, such as a newspaper or the window of a shop, is a short piece of writing telling people about something or asking for something.

  27. Study the picture and answer the following questions! • What is the text about? • What is the purpose of the text? • When does the 3rd period of finals take place? • If you want to check the lost item, when do you do it? • What will happen with the weather at tomorrow?

  28. Invitation Card The invitation card is a written paper or electronic image that is sent to people for different occasions. The message informs a receiver about an event to which he is invited. Invitation cards can be customized (different sizes, colors, themes, materials, fonts and folding designs) and made out of multiple materials (paper, tissue, textile, plastic).

  29. Study the picture and answer the following questions! • What is the text about? • What is the purpose of the text? • When will the reception took place? • Who are the bridge and the bridegroom?

  30. Cultural Note • Invitations often require a person to RSVP as to whether or not they will attend an event. • R.S.V.P. stands for a French phrase, "répondez, s'ilvousplaît," which means "please reply." The person sending the invitation would like you to tell him or her whether you accept or decline the invitation. That is, will you be coming to the event or not? Etiquette rules followed in most Western cultures require that if you receive a formal, written invitation, you should reply promptly, perhaps that same day.

  31. Read the following text! Are you looking for appliances or furniture to give new life to your home? Look no further. Here at Frontier Furniture, we have everything you need to give your home a new look and feel. Stereos, video machines, refrigerators, light fixtures, dining room tables, washers and dryers. 32. In the advertisement, announcement, and invitation, we can find imperative sentence. Imperatives are verbs used to give orders, commands, warning or instructions, and (if you use "please") to make a request. • In the advertisement above, we can find imperative expression: • Look no further. • So come on down to Frontier Furniture. Note that an imperative sentence does not require a subject; the pronoun "you" is implied.

  33. Cultural Note Although you find the word “please” in the expression, and you consider it as a request , the main idea is a command. So you know now that the word “please” makes a command into a request.

  34. Write your own advertisement, announcement, and invitation based on your own topic. • List important information on the topic (what it is about, when and where it happened, etc.). • Arrange the important information you have got to write the advertisement, announcement, and invitation .
